After you have completed your orthodontic treatment and your teeth are properly aligned, our dentist will provide you with a retainer. Retainers are a type of custom-made oral appliance designed to help keep your teeth in their newly straightened positions so that they do not shift out of alignment.
There are several types of retainers available, and we will review your options with you in order to find the type of retainer that will work best for you. Common types of retainers include:
- Hawley Retainers: This type of retainer consists of wires and clasps embedded in a plastic body that covers the roof of the mouth or lies alongside the tongue-side of the teeth. The clasps in the retainer fit around certain teeth, anchoring the retainer in place to help your teeth stay in their proper alignment.
- Clear (Essix) Retainers: This type of retainer is made from clear plastic and fits snugly over the teeth. Clear retainers are similar to clear aligners in appearance and are more discreet, but they may not be as durable as a Hawley or fixed retainer.
- Fixed Retainers: Also known as bonded or permanent retainers, this type of retainer is attached to the back surfaces of the front teeth to prevent them from shifting out of place. A fixed retainer can only be removed by a dental professional.
